About The Free Rangers by Joseph Alexander Altsheler
Joseph Alexander Altsheler (April 29, 1862 – June 5, 1919) was an American newspaper reporter, editor and author of popular juvenile historical fiction. He was a prolific writer, and produced fifty-one novels and (at least) fifty-one short stories. Thirty-two of his novels were part of his seven series The Civil War Series (8 volumes) The French and Indian War Series (6 volumes) The Gold Series (2 volumes) The Great West Series (2 volumes) The Texan Series (3 volumes) The World War Series (3 volumes) The Young Trailers Series (8 volumes) Although each of the thirty-two novels constitutes an independent story, Altsheler suggested a reading order for each series (i.e., he numbered the volumes). The remaining nineteen novels can be read in any order. [Note, however, that A Knight of Philadelphia was later expanded through the addition of nineteen chapters and some minor tweaks to become Mr. Altsheler's novel In Hostile Red.]

The Free Rangers takes place along the Mississippi River during the American Revolutionary period. It broadens the war's significance beyond the battles and politics of the Atlantic seaboard, focusing on issues and conflicts in the interior, that would prove pivotal in the subsequent development of the United States. The pacing of the story moves along, keeping ther reader involved as the plot unfolds. However, the writing style is dated and doesn't flow well, at least to the ear of this reader. Also, I skimmed dialog that rhapsodized about the freedom of life in the wildernes and predictions about how the wilderness would look in future decades. These passages sounded trite, I also wish that the five "hero" characters of the story had been better developed and easier to distinguish from one another. The book is OK as a casual read; but it may disappoint readers looking for more substantive historical fiction. I would characterize this book as a story set in the past, rather than a serious treatment of past events and personalities seen through the lens of historical fiction.Product details

This is a great novel about settlement of the area west of the colonies and the people who did it. I enjoyed the descriptions of the characters, how people interacted, and the descriptions of the country at the time. The political intrigue that forms the basis of the story is a good twist. The attempt to portray accents of the time made reading a bit harder, but do indicate the education levels of many people of the time -a nice touch.

My Dad turned me onto this series when I was about 9. I loved it and read them assiduously until I was in my late teens. Now I have rediscovered them. Some might say these clean ands simple tales of young outdoorsmen in the time of Daniel Boone & Geo Washington may be dated, but myself I found myself enjoying them again. A nice series, not cluttered by Pop references or too much darkness.
If you yearn for the simpler but still well written books of our youth, give one of this series a try. If you know of a young reader who likes the outdoors, give one of these as a gift.
This book was written for the younger person at heart but was very interesting and adventurous. It makes for a good quiet evening read before bedtime. The interesting parts are the details of the people and the endurance they have to endure. A good read.
This was an enjoyable story reminiscent of the James Fenimore Cooper style. Descriptions of pre-revolutionary era backwoodsmen and natural native settings brought out the little boy in me who wanted to pioneer the frontier.
I did question how the heroic five knew what and where to go to confront the 'enemy, but once I got into the story, I didn't care.
Occasionally the 'Kaintucky' patois was distracting and strained and the contrast made me wonder how the Spanish spoke english better.
I would still recommend this for those like me who love these kind of feel-good novels.
Altsheler writes solid adventure stories about brave pioneers trying to establish the United States. In this particular story, his five heroes are charged with a mission to prevent the Spanish from entering the American Revolution on the British side.
Although they're more along the lines of a juvenile work, they hold up well for adult audiences- the characters are vividly drawn, and even the baddies are given a humanizing and realistic gloss that raises this above a lot of contemporary works with mustache twirling villains out to do wicked deeds for no real reason. Great books for readers of any age- but I'd particularly suggest them for a young teen boy that isn't really into reading. The fighting, courage, pioneering and friendship portrayed here was a great inspiration to myself as a young man.
Most historical attention to the American Revolution is directed toward the people and events in the Thirteen Colonies, as well as on the other side of the Atlantic, in England. This exciting tale, centered on five stalwart "Sons of Kaintock" (Kentucky), tells of equally important events taking place on the Mississippi from Kentucky all the way down to Spanish-controlled New Orleans and the Louisiana Territory. Classified as "historical fiction" because of conversations which may never have actually taken place verbatim, it is none-the-less an intriguing insight into early American history. The ONLY "negative" aspect of the read is the author's attempt to have the Kentuckians' speech and accents sound "authentic" - it becomes somewhat cumbersome, but it's still certainly readable and comprehensible! Coupled with the author's seeming "pressing need" to end the story quickly (did he run out of time or paper?), he leaves the "Sons" and the reader only half-way back up the "Old Muddy" on the return trip, which is why I couldn't rate the book with a full five stars. I very much enjoyed it, though!
