Instead of following the orders, he sets off on his own nautical course hoping to avoid capture or destruction by the American Navy.Walter M. Miller's participation in the Allies' aerial bombardment of Monte Cassino during World War II affected him greatly, and this story is a compelling and disturbing meditation on war, courage, cowardice, duty, individuality, and community. Like Monte Cassino, it ends tragically.
